Fuji NXTR S: True Modularity Meets the Smart Factory

October 4, 2026

Fuji America will show the NXTR S and AIMEXR platforms at SMTA International 2026, October 27–29 at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center in Rosemont, Illinois (Booth #2829). For a company that has spent decades refining one idea — modularity — the NXTR S is the clearest statement yet of where that idea is going.

Most placement machines are sold as fixed boxes: pick your model, live with its head, replace the whole machine when your product changes. Fuji’s NXTR S starts from the opposite assumption — that everything which matters on a placement line should be swappable, and that the machine itself should catch the mistakes.

Modularity that goes all the way down

The NXTR S continues Fuji’s NXT-series concept of “true modularity,” and the 2021-generation S model pushes it further. Lines are built from 1R (one module base) and 2R (two module base) modules, each narrow enough to open forward and give access from both sides. Placement heads — RH20, RH08, RH02 — exchange in a single action without tools, so an operator can swap a head or clear a fault without calling a technician with a tool case. Modules themselves can be switched out even after a line is installed, matching the equipment to the product rather than the other way around.

Investment scales the same way. You add capacity in single-module steps, and the supply units — MFU-52/MFU-47 multi feeders, Tray unit-RM — are shared across Fuji platforms, so feeders from existing lines roll straight onto a new NXTR line.

The machine that checks its own work

The genuinely innovative part of the NXTR S is not speed — it is how much quality control now happens inside the mounter, seconds after placement:

  • MPI (Mark and Parts Inspection) checks placement results immediately after placement — part presence, misaligned placements, part direction — before the next component covers the evidence.
  • IPS (Intelligent Parts Sensor) watches the pickup and placement cycle itself: dropped parts, part height, parts remaining on nozzles, stuck nozzles, and upside-down checks for miniature parts.
  • LCR and 3D coplanarity checks catch electrical-value mismatches on chip parts and lead/bump defects on ICs before they become solder-joint scrap.
  • A high-resolution camera with advanced lighting recognizes WL-CSP bumps as small as 45 µm, keeping the tiniest packages inside the accuracy budget.

Placement accuracy is ±25 µm at Cpk ≥ 1.00 as standard, with a heightened-accuracy mode reaching ±10 µm — and the placement stroke follows panel warpage in real time, controlling push-in so tall parts are not crushed and small parts are not floated.

Built for non-stop production

The S model’s “smart factory” ambitions show up in quieter features: the LCU (Line Control Unit) collects logs and images automatically, responds to network issues, and supports self-diagnosis and remote control, so the evidence needed to prevent the next stoppage is never lost. Waste tape is collected into one place instead of one bin per module, and nozzles, feeders, and heads can be maintained offline with automation units — managed through Fuji’s Nexim software — so maintenance happens while the line keeps running.

What this means if you are buying in 2026

For second-hand buyers, the NXTR generation is attractive precisely because of this modularity: heads, feeders, and supply units migrate across Fuji platforms, and a used 1R or 2R module can extend an existing NXT/NXTR line instead of forcing a full replacement. When inspecting a used NXTR S, check head condition and hours, IPS/MPI option fitment, LCU status, and whether the Nexim license level matches your traceability requirements.
