Koh Young Smart AI Solutions: Turning Inspection Data into Process Control

Every SMT line already owns its most valuable process engineer — it just never uses the data properly. Koh Young, the pioneer of True 3D measurement-based inspection, is making that point tangible with its Smart AI Solutions portfolio, currently on tour at SMTA Guadalajara 2026 (Booth 522, October 7–8) and the inaugural EFX in Stuttgart (October 6–8). Rather than treating inspection as a quality gate that merely says pass or fail, Koh Young is positioning its measurement data as the raw material for a continuous improvement loop across printing, placement, and rework.
What is actually on the table
The Smart AI stack is built on four practical building blocks, each solving a problem line managers complain about every week:
KAP Auto Programming — AI-powered component recognition and libraries that cut inspection program creation from hours to minutes. For high-mix factories running frequent new product introductions, this is where inspection used to bleed the most time.
KPO Printer & KPO Mounter (Koh Young Process Optimizer) — closed-loop software that feeds SPI/AOI measurement results back to the screen printer and mounter, trimming paste volume drift and placement variation before they become downstream defects.
Smart Review — AI-assisted defect classification that separates true defects from false calls, so operators spend attention where it matters and verdicts stay consistent across shifts.
KSMART — a connected data platform that pools inspection results across machines and lines, turning thousands of daily measurements into dashboards, trend charts, and early warnings about systemic process drift.
The hardware behind the intelligence
The software only works because the measurement is trustworthy. At Guadalajara, Koh Young is showing four platforms that feed the AI layer:
KY8030-3 — high-speed True 3D SPI with 8-megapixel imaging, delivering the quantitative paste data that KPO Printer needs for closed-loop correction at the first critical stage of the line.
Zenith UHS — high-speed True 3D AOI built for demanding, high-volume assemblies without giving up measurement accuracy.
Zenith DS — double-sided True 3D inspection, covering the increasingly dense two-sided assemblies typical of automotive and server boards.
Neptune C+ — LIFT (Laser Interferometry for Fluid Tomography) technology for non-destructive 3D inspection of conformal coatings, underfill, and epoxy, catching bubbles and cracks while measuring coverage and thickness quantitatively.
Why the practical angle matters
The industry has heard “AI + inspection” promises before. What makes this rollout different is that Koh Young is not selling a magic black box — it is selling a workflow. The pitch, repeated by the company’s regional managers in both Mexico and Germany, is that accurate True 3D measurement remains the foundation, but the value of that data now reaches much further: fewer manual reviews, fewer unnecessary printer adjustments, faster root-cause analysis, and production visibility that survives operator turnover.
For a factory deciding whether inspection data is worth acting on, the practical test is simple. Can a new product’s inspection program be generated automatically? Can the printer correct itself before a defect appears? Can two shifts reach the same verdict on the same board? Smart AI Solutions answers yes to all three — and that is what turns inspection from a cost center into process control.
